DOES IT MATTER HOW WE USE SOCIAL MEDIA?
As we have explored previously, teenagers are particularly vulnerable to excessive digital activity. Social media overuse is associated with a loss of happiness, self-control and emotional regulation. In adults, the message is nuanced: social media can be beneficial and life-enhancing â in some circumstances. We can connect online with people who matter most to us. We can communicate with loved ones and support friends in crisis. We can look out for each other and provide encouragement to socially isolated individuals. In theory, the benefits of social media are unlimited â adding value to existing relationships. But in reality, itâs a little more complex.
Infrequent social media users have a lower risk of developing mental health problems than more prolific social media users. Active usage (posting updates and commenting on posts) is more positive than passive usage (scrolling newsfeeds and mindlessly viewing videos). Individual personality traits also affect the impact of social media on an individual. Those who have a tendency towards obsession or to comparing themselves with others are more likely to be adversely affected. (Comparison almost always makes people feel less happy, irrespective of whether they compare themselves positively or negatively.)12 Social media, when used deliberately and in moderation, is a value-adding technology, so long as it doesnât take up too much space. How we use our tools and how often we use them makes all the difference.
